February 11th The United Sates Life Saving Service and Shipwrecks off IBSP
George Brown will provide an overview of the US Life Saving Service and the contributions made by NJ and Ocean County to rescuing people from shipwrecks. Island Beach has a long history of lifesaving stations including two that saw active duty in WWII. Other local contributions include the “Newell Act” and the Francis lifesaving car.
February 25th Garden State Tortoise
Garden State Tortoise was founded in 2011 by Chris and Casey Leone. Nestled along the southern shore of New Jersey, GST acts as a breeding facility, rescue and permanent home to turtles and tortoises from all over Mother Earth. In over 30 years of working hands on with such a highly threatened group of vertebrates, the Leones aim to unite conservation and preservation efforts through educating the world that both are needed to truly save them from extinction. Chris is also an assistant herpetologist and his wife Casey is a former zookeeper. GST is also home to Otis the turtle, a fan favorite who has starred in youtube videos!
March 10th Marine Mammal Stranding Center
Formed in 1978, MMSC's mission is the rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine mammals and sea turtles. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is the only Federally-authorized animal hospital in the State of New Jersey that responds to these animals in distress and provides medical treatment.
March 24th ReClam the Bay
The mission of ReClam the Bay is to improve the condition of the estuary through involving and educating the public about the estuary’s water quality and the importance of shellfish. By involving the public in the care, feeding, and life cycles of the shellfish, RCTB helps people understand what an integral role shellfish play in our lives.
