Lecture Series: Shipwrecks of Island Beach

March 8 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

An early freeze in December of 1886 caused havoc to local Oystermen. One oyster sloop, the Llewelynn grounded in the shallow water and froze in Barnegat Bay behind Island Beach on Dec. 3, 1886. Its cargo of oysters worth $25 was lost. The Llewelynn is just one of dozens of ships that were wrecked near the shores of Island Beach. Join Asbury Park Press reporter and historian Dan Radel as he recounts their stories.
