Learn all about the many historical and ecological functions of the bay, and how it is all intertwined. You will be told past stories on the people who lived here long ago and how they utilized the natural resources of the bay, all while observing and learning about the marine life, plants, birds, and geology of the area. Come join Park Natural Educators to learn more in depth about this unique ecosystem. Ages 14 and older. All equipment will be provided. Shellfish are an important link within the Barnegat Bay food-chain and ecosystem. Harvest these delicious soft-bodied gastropods by digging your toes into the sandy bottom of the bay or by using a clamming rake. Note: This is a Self-Guided Program. A Recreational Shellfish Harvesting Permit is required to take your clams home! Review current regulations and apply for a permit here! Individuals may sign out clam rakes at the Nature Center (7 miles into the Park). It is on a first come, first serve basis, as we only have a limited number of rakes to provide. Join the Marine Mammal Stranding Center and take part in this Mock Sea Turtle Stranding Program to learn about sea turtles and why they strand, then participate in a hands-on mock sea turtle stranding on the beach. Join us on an adventurous hike and experience the magic of Island Beach State Park at night. Hike through the dark, dense maritime forest, over the rolling dunes and down to the beach. Enjoy a blazing bonfire, marshmallows and s'mores while learning about the parks history, ecology and even some astronomy! Come out and learn all about shellfish! ReClam the Bay is a local, non-profit environmental organization that promotes environmental involvement and education. Each year, ReClam the Bay grows and maintains millions of baby clams and oysters, which are used to re-stock the Barnegat Bay. Certified Shellfish Gardeners will teach you about the important relationship between the water in our estuary and the shellfish that inhabit it. In addition, learn how shellfish are raised in upwellers, how to care for them, as well as feeding patterns, & life cycles of these fragile creatures! Learn all about the many historical and ecological functions of the bay, and how it is all intertwined. You will be told past stories on the people who lived here long ago and how they utilized the natural resources of the bay, all while observing and learning about the marine life, plants, birds, and geology of the area. Come out and learn all about shellfish! ReClam the Bay is a local, non-profit environmental organization that promotes environmental involvement and education. Each year, ReClam the Bay grows and maintains millions of baby clams and oysters, which are used to re-stock the Barnegat Bay. Certified Shellfish Gardeners will teach you about the important relationship between the water in our estuary and the shellfish that inhabit it. In addition, learn how shellfish are raised in upwellers, how to care for them, as well as feeding patterns, & life cycles of these fragile creatures!
